Hotel Review – Rory’s (Formally Amigo’s) on Phu Quoc, Vietnam
Strange Lands Rating – 4/5 We recommend Rory’s hotel. Positives: This hotel & restaurant, Rory’s, is in the process of shaking off the slightly negative reputation (formerly Amigo’s) that the previous owners gave it. The main complaint was the loud, badly sung, live music. Nowadays, the new owners, a couple from Australia, are very friendly. While there is still a social feel to the place on the evenings, with a wide range of cocktails and drinks available, the music is kept to a good level and is tasteful. During the day you can relax in the restaurant that overlooks the beach, or you can sunbathe on its private beach. The food is good, and seems to be priced accordingly. You can rent a bike from the staff for around $5. I personally felt...
Hostel Review – ImamBonjol hostel, Semarang, Indonesia
Strange Lands Rating 3.5/5 We recommend this hostel if you’re on a budget Positives: The hostel was clean. Decent wifi. Reasonably priced. Helpful mother and son working there. Free morning coffee. Situated not far from a large-ish mall. Negatives: Not easy to access due to high gates and the lack of a buzzer. The hostel was actually part of what looked like a warehouse, it didn’t feel very secure. 3 electricity black outs during the evening (although, this may have just been unfortunate). Notes: This was no normal hostel. The guest rooms are situated on the second floor of an strange looking warehouse. If ghosts exist, this is where they live. It’s a spooky looking place, right out of a Hitchcock movie. The owners, a mother and son, were...
Hostel Review Yogyakarta – Andrea Hotel
Strange Lands Rating – 4/5 We recommend Andrea hotel. Positives: Extremely clean. Perfectly situated. It’s on Gang 2, a cosy lane with restaurants and accommodation. It’s a few minutes walk from central Yogyakarta. Super-friendly staff. Headed by a very nice Swiss gentleman, the rest of the staff smile easily and make you feel very comfortable. Reasonably priced. Despite its location, it was priced 50,000 less than the hostel we stayed in that was out of the way and generally unpleasant to stay in. Didn’t see any mosquitoes. Breakfast included in the price. Coffee started from just 4,000 rupiah. Very sociable atmosphere. There’s a veranda that has a very friendly feel to it. On more than one occasion we sat up late chatting to fellow...
Hostel Review Yogyakarta – Kampoeng Djawa
Strange Lands Rating 3/5 We don’t recommend you use this hostel. Prices range from 100,000-225,000 rupiah per night Positive: Included in the price are breakfast, afternoon tea and snack. The breakfasts change every day and are quite healthy. The afternoon tea is lovely, and the snacks are usually tasty Indonesian dishes. The staff speak English well. The small courtyard is very cosy and green. Most rooms have a nice little porch you can relax on. We generally felt our belongings were safe. Tea and coffee are available all day. Negative: Apart from 2 of the staff, the rest were miserable. It was quite an effort getting a smile from them. It created a slightly unwelcoming feel. The wifi was useless, as was the ancient computer in the lobby. At one point,...
Jakarta Hostel Review – Six Degrees
Strange Lands Rating – 4.5/5 Overall we highly recommend this hostel. Prices range from 115,000 rupiah to 260,000 rupiah. Positive: The staff are exceptionally friendly, giving the hostel a lovely community feel. They seemed happy to help me with my Indonesian. The rooms, for the most part, are clean and comfortable. The shared bathrooms are also clean and some of them are extremely spacious. Breakfast is a plate of sliced melon and 2 slices of toast with jam. It is included in the price. Fruit juice and tasty drip coffee comes with breakfast. Tea and water are available all day. The communal chillout area has a big screen, an xbox and a Nintendo wii available. Staff and customers often enjoy movies together on an evening time. There is a well maintained pool...
