This post concludes our trilogy of temples/historical sites in and around Yogyakarta.
Candi Borobudur is by far the most famous temple in Yogyakarta. The 9th century Buddhist site is a single structure with various levels.
We went on Monday in the hopes that the weekend tourists would have returned to work, leaving us to roam the temple alone. Sadly, tourists were everywhere. I had to wait 5 minutes to take a single shot.
Despite my frustrations, I could see just how beautiful the temple was. The main structures are circular, almost in the shape of a large bell. And at the top of the compound you get a wonderful view of the surrounding green area.
If I’m speaking honestly, I preferred Prambanan and Ratu Boko to Borobudur. Maybe the tourists spoiled it for us. Possibly paying a bit extra to visit the temple during sunrise would really give you a more spiritual experience.
