Being a blogger, I love to read other people’s travel blogs. Mostly I’m just nosy, but over the past few months a handful of blogs have shone through for me.
The problem with blogging, or anything else for that matter, is publicity. You can have the most incredible adventures, offer stunning pictures, and pen extraordinary stories, but if you don’t publicise your stuff it’s just debris floating in the sea.
Generally the blogs I read are not only interesting, but their authors work hard to get them out there. Up until now Rachel and I have done almost zero in the way of marketing our blog. We need to take a leaf out of their book.
Balancing the time between language learning, trying to live an exciting life, and working full time on multiple sites, isn’t easy. We’ve got a few years to get it right.
Ideally we’d work full time just on our travel site to make it the best it could be. We are under no illusions, however. Very few people are earning a decent living from a single travel blog. Our plan is to hedge our bets, create quality content, and get ourselves out there. So far it’s working nicely.
Hopefully, like the guys below, we can continue to improve.
To the blogs I currently enjoy:
Nomadic Samuel – This blog is full of energy. The author, Samuel, has a wealth of experience of teaching in Asia. He’s very productive on his site, and has a few others you can check out. There’s a lot of information on his site, including tips on budget travelling and photography tips. Read his most recent post Incredible India part 29.
Connvoyage - This is a personal favourite of Rachel, too. Connie, currently living in Hong Kong, seems to put a lot of time into her posts. Her recent post on Taiwan’s night food markets made me hungry just looking at the pictures. Watch her most recent video blog
Positive World Travel – Ant and Elise, the authors of this blog, seem like a nice couple. They’ve done their fair-share of travelling, and have a very cool blog to show for it. They’re quick to reach out to other bloggers and share their experiences. Read their recent post on hiking etiquette.
Vagabond Quest (Dua Ransel) – Another couple blog, this time by an Indonesian girl and a Canadian guy. They also have a blog in Indonesian, which is a nice help for us in our quest to learn Indonesian. Their photos are also great. See their most recent sunset shot.
2backpackers – Yet another couple travel blog, this one has some great photos. Jason and Aracely are currently in the Galapagos taking some fantastic shots of wildlife. Jason recently wrote a very honest report on the challenges one can face as a travel blogger
While I’ve only mentioned 5 here, I do read a lot more. I enjoy finding new exciting travel sites to read. If you have a travel blog, or know of a good one, by all means leave it in the comments box. I’d love to read it.
