Fun Things to Do whilst Travelling by Train
A lot of people don’t see a long train journey as much fun, but there are things you can do to make your journey something to look forward to.
First of all, it gives you the opportunity to sit down and read a book or listen to some good music. If you’re usually too busy for such things, then rail journeys should be relished, as you can spend some quality time with your latest book or iPod download without interruptions.
You could also take your laptop with you if you have one. A laptop on a train provides endless possibilities – you can do some work or study, play games, watch a film, listen to some more music or even write a poem if you so wish!
Talk to the people around you – as long as they’re not busy reading or working on their laptop themselves! You can learn a lot from talking to strangers on a train, and who knows, you may even make some new friends. You can chat about where they are going, what they are going there for, what they do for a living – whatever you want. Just start up a conversation and see where it goes.
You can also use your time on a train to catch up on some sleep. Taking short naps means you’ll reach your destination feeling more refreshed – just don’t miss your stop! Studies have revealed that power naps are very good for the body, so get comfy and shut your eyes and you’ll be asleep in no time.
If you want to keep your brain occupied, then get down to some puzzles while you’re on the train. Buy a cheap puzzle book and you’ll soon lose track of time as you struggle to complete all the answers. Whether it’s Sudoku, crosswords, riddles or anagrams, the puzzles are sure to engross you so much that you’ll forget you’re even on a train.
Catch up with someone by giving them a call. If you’ve got some time on your hands, it’s the ideal time to reach out to that person you’ve been meaning to contact for ages but just haven’t managed to speak to. Ideally, you should talk quietly so as not to disturb other passengers, and avoid sitting on the designated ‘quiet coach’. Otherwise, get your phone out and have a good old natter.
Last but definitely not least, just enjoy the view. Railway lines run through parts of the country where roads often do not go, so you can see new and engaging sights ranging from cities and urban areas to countryside and coastline. Watching the world whizz past the window is also quite relaxing, so enjoy some quiet time and just sit back and observe.
You can buy cheap rail tickets online, whether you are looking for trains to Birmingham, trains to Manchester, trains to London or wherever. Reserve your seat in advance and then you can look forward to enjoying the activities above!
