Obsessive Korean Students
The week before the school semester finished, a few of my co-teacher’s old students who graduated last year came to visit her. Among them was a boy who I taught every week, who is very unassuming, shy, and self-conscious. He used to get in trouble for wearing make up at school and being too feminine. My co-teacher told me they were worried he might be gay, so they counselled him, as if that was necessary or even effective.
During their visit they sat in my office at the back of the classroom. I sat at my desk surfing the Internet for camp ideas. After a few minutes a couple of girls started staring through my office window. Then, all of a sudden about 50 1st grade girls came swarming in the classroom, fighting to get a look in the office. I popped my head out the office door asked them what they were doing. They said ‘the boy, handsome’. Now, this boy isn’t ugly, but he didn’t get much female attention last year. However, he is extremely fashionable and tries to get the boy band look going.
I told the girls to clear off but they ignored me. They started banging on the office door. My co-teacher told them to clear off too, they ignored her as well.
I decided I had no influence on the situation so I picked up my camera and took some pictures. A part of me thought the girls would be frightened off if I started taking snaps of their weird behaviour, but they remained unfazed, shouting for this boy to come out of the office.
My co-teacher decided they should go somewhere else. The 1st grade girls decided he wasn’t going anywhere. As they stood up to leave, the girls started pulling at him. He was surrounded, and he looked petrified. Not only was he not expecting this, he had never experienced anything like it before. Eventually, one of his friends, a girl who you wouldn’t want to fight, burst through the crowd like a knife through butter, grabbed the boy, and dragged him away, while threatening the mob of girls.
After he’d left they came back to my office and took turns sitting in the seat he was sitting in and they were pestering me to send a picture of him to them. I ushered them out of my office and sent a message to my co-teacher saying ‘KOREAN STUDENTS ARE CRAZY!!’.
Never in my life have I witnessed such an absurd scene. Here was a young lad, not famous in anyway, not considered typically attractive, being screamed at and pulled by a hoard of girls. If this happens to an ordinary high school student, imagine what a famous singer goes through in Korea. Absolutely ridiculousl!!
If anyone can shed some light on this behaviour please feel free to leave a comment.
